The heated action of U Sports 3-on-3 Floorball Faceoff 2017 sparked off at D’Marquee @ Downtown East over the weekend on 8 & 9 April 2017. The annual floorball event, which has been running since 2010, drew a total of 900 participants with 182 teams – the biggest turnout yet. Participants ranged from 9 to 47 years old in the youth, open and novice categories.
Organized by the sports leaders from Team U Sports Liitto Floorball Club, the event aimed to bring together the floorball community and increase awareness of the sport among the general public. The relatively new sport which originated from Sweden in the 1960s has since gained massive popularity in countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.
The event also saw Special Olympics Singapore (SOSG) floorball team participating in the exhibition match and emerging victorious against the Team U Sports Liitto Floorball Club with a score of 2:1.
SOSG also sent teams to participate in the mixed novice category of the tournament. Their passion for the sport and consistent effort in their trainings were clearly evident from their skillful play. With its mission to empower persons with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit and productive, SOSG team takes in young athletes from as young as 5 years old.
Many participants took the opportunity to join in the onsite fringe activities specially set up to provide an engaging intermission between the floorball competitions. Games include Sharp Shooter, King of the Rink, and more. Not to mention, most of the ended up with their arms full of prizes and were all smiles as they walked away from the court.
Aiming a good shot at the targets!

Shannon Yeo, who studies at NUS Faculty of Law, learnt this sport 6 years ago during her junior college days. She represents the ‘KongFused” Team. ‘I enjoy floorball as it is fun and fast-paced’, said Shannon. She also found the event very successful as it managed to gather people with the same passion.
Dzafir Mirza from Hua Yi Secondary School, who plays for the “EDWIN” team has been playing floorball since Secondary 1 and has never looked back on his decision to pick up the sport. He was able to meet new friends and bond with them in the games.
As part of the event, Team U Sports Liitto Floorball Club encourages the donation of unwanted or old floorball sticks to be refurbished under their Gift-A-Stick initiative. The floorball sticks go a long way in bringing smiles to underprivileged children and the SOSG Floorball Team.
