This is an exciting year for our U Sports floorball champion, Natalia Clare Wee. The 21-year-old won U Sports’ Sportsgirl of the Year award in May this year, and in the following month, she and her Women’s Floorball teammates clinched the Gold medal for Singapore at the 28th SEA Games.

U Sports Sportsgirl of the Year 2015, Natalia Wee, receiving the SIM Global Education’s Sports & Artistic Talent Scholarship from Dr Lee Kwok Cheong, CEO of SIM Global Education.

Recently, in July, Natalia was awarded the SIM Global Education’s (GE) Sports and Artistic Talent scholarship for her to pursue a four-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Banking and Finance. She was one of the 16 outstanding applicants who was offered this prestigious SIM GE scholarship. Mr Gary Wong, also a SEA Games Floorball gold medallist (Men’s team), was another recipient of the SIM GE scholarship. This year, 550 applicants applied for the SIM’s bond-free scholarships, which are valued close to $400,000 in total.

“I’m very happy to receive this SIM scholarship and it is an honour that we, the local athletes, get recognised. Floorball is an important part of my life and a big part of my success. Much of this came about through perseverance and hard work with my fellow team members, so likewise, I will put my best efforts in my studies too.”

About U Sports and Floorball

This year, floorball made its debut as a medal event at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore and both our national men’s and women’s teams made history by sweeping the sport’s first gold medals.

Natalia was part of the Singapore women’s floorball team in the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar when this was only a demonstration sport and no medals were given. Her team and the Singapore men’s team both emerged as champions then. Since then, Natalia and her team has grown from strength to strength, emerging as 1st runner up in the Singapore Floorball League 2014 and now champion team in the SEA Games.

In addition, Natalia is also one of the sports leaders in U Sports, the sporting community of the Labour Movement. U Sports provide a platform and opportunity for sportspeople like her to play competitively in inter-union tournaments and thus enhances their match experience and skills. Natalia is also part of the team that organizes the iconic U Sports 3-on-3 Floorball tournament held annually to promote the sport to the wider community.

On 26 May 2015, Natalia won the Sportsgirl of the Year in our annual U Sports Awards Night. It is an annual celebration of the top sportspersons in the Labour Movement for their participation in the inter-union sporting tournament, the U Games, and also the outstanding athletes who represented NTUC in various sporting competitions.
