U Sports @ SEA Games
Posted date: 30-Jun-2015

U Sports is proud to be part of the action at SEA Games 2015! From active supporters at the stands to game officials in the tournament, the nationwide event was the perfect opportunity for us to advocate sports to our community.

Here are the 3 things that you could have found us involved in at SEA Games 2015:

1. U Sports Fan Club led by U CHAMPs

Our U CHAMPs aka U Sports ambassadors were on the ground to distribute tickets to our NTUC members and advocate sporting interests to our community by explaining the various activities that we do to engage members. Demonstrating the truly Singaporean culture, they also attempted to ‘chope’ seats for our members but that plan fell through at the discretion of the SEA Games organizers.

Nevertheless, the U CHAMPs prepared and gave out freebies to NTUC members who managed to find them in the sea of red. They also got to support and cheer on Team Singapore in exhilarating matches that inspired them to strive harder in the respective sports.

Woo Ka Foong, our Floorball U CHAMP helping out at the Football matches, exclaimed, “It felt great to be volunteering for such a major event, and at the same time, supporting our very own football team on home ground. The game which Singapore played against Cambodia was the first live football game I’ve ever watched at a stadium and the atmosphere and supporters were awesome!”

Fellow U CHAMP, Sam Pei Li, added, “I was 5 years old the last time SEA Games was held in Singapore and I only watched it on TV. But this time around, it’s an honour to help and also be able to watch the game live. We did our best to cheer for the players on the (football) field to give their best and being the 12th player. Watching Team Singapore take part in the games inspired me to train harder and one day represent Singapore too!”

2. Team U Sports athletes clinched Gold @ SEA Games

We are filled with pride as we watched our U CHAMPs donned the gold medal at the podium during the SEA Games Floorball award ceremony. We would like to congratulate our U CHAMPs: Felicia Lim, Jowie Tan, Debbie Poh, Ong Hui Hui, Syed Abdullah Sharifah, Gracia Sengutuvan, and Natalia Wee who represented our nation. The latter was also the winner of the Sportsgirl of the Year in our prestigious U Sports Awards Night.

We are grateful for their invaluable contributions to U Sports, including being part of the organizing committee for our annual 3-on-3 Floorball Faceoff event and we are honored to have provided them the platform to support their sporting interest through the years. Their success story is a truly inspiring one as we witness their years of determination and hardwork bear fruit.

3. Taking charge @ SEA Games

Simply representing U Sports Fan Club to rally our union members at the SEA Games Football matches wasn’t enough for our U Sports staff, Mr Sathish Naidu. He was appointed to be the National Technical Official (NTO) for the Sepak  Takraw tournament at SEA Games – his appointment also marked a significant moment for the sport as the first non-malay to be the NTO in Singapore’s Sepak Takraw history.
