Welcome to our Golf Interest Base Community

While golf is a leisurely sport enjoyed at one’s own pace, it demands decision-making and focus ahead of every stroke. Good for the mind and body under the tranquil surroundings of the course, it is a great time for golfers to build friendships on the course through the holes whilst keeping fit.

Over the years, U Sports has organized various major golf tournaments, bringing together people from different walks of life, from the young to active agers alike, where multiple personal friendship and business relations were forged.

New to Golf? Dream of driving a powerful accurate long swing at the range or perfecting that putt into the hole like the pros but have no idea on how to get started?

Read on for some good-to-know basics for NTUC/nEbO members.

Please note that the information listed below are for reference only and details may be subject to changes without prior notice.

Getting Started

Proficiency Certification

A PC is issued by a golf club to allow new golfers to play on golf courses in order to gain sufficient experience. PC grants players with temporary playing privileges and has an expiry date. The golfer is expected to take the necessary steps to obtain a golf Handicap afterwards.

Orchid Country Club (OCC) members may obtain their Handicap or PC at the Club. For more info on OCC membership, please visit https://www.orchidclub.com/membership/

Alternatively, NTUC members can sign up for MGK membership and register for PC and Handicap with MGK. Related charges and fees apply. For more info, please refer to https://www.mygolfkaki.com/Handicap.aspx

Getting your Handicap

PC grants players with temporary playing privileges and has an expiry date. The golfer is expected to take the necessary steps to obtain a golf Handicap afterwards.

A Handicap Index is a net score that indicates the golfer’s playing ability derived from a few rounds of golf played. A Handicap Index will allow golfers of different playing ability to play fairly on somewhat equivalent terms.

For MGK members, the process typically involves first going for a Courtesy Round (9 holes golf rounds) with appointed tester. Upon successful completion of Courtesy Round, submit 3 x 18-hole score cards and USGA Handicap Index will be awarded after submission of sufficient score cards.

Other Info

Attire & Footwear

Etiquette on the course is highly emphasized in the game of golf and the dress code must be adhered to at all times. Players are encouraged to be dressed in:

  • Shirts: Polo shirts or collared tees
  • Bottoms:
    • For Ladies: Skirts, Skorts, and Culottes
    • For Men: Pants or bermuda-length shorts (Linen, Khaki or Cotton)
  • Footwear: Spiked/Spike-less golf shoe which offers comfort, breathability, water resistance, style and traction.

*Depending on the conditions you play in, you may want to consider waterproof shoes. Course conditions can be wet even if you’re not playing in the rain as there’s often moisture on the grass.

Equipment

What you need:

  1. Golf Clubs – Varying golf clubs may be used for different kinds of shots (depending on the distances and trajectories). Mainly classified into four types – woods, irons, wedges, and putters, there are different sizes available in each category, indicated by a number on the club. Lower numbers indicate more power for players to make further shots.
  2. Golf Tee – Used to support a stationary ball so that the player can strike it
  3. Golf Balls – Neon or colored golf balls are great for beginners and easy-to-spot on the green.
  4. Gloves – Improve your grip on the club and prevent blisters on your hand
